The dog is chewing the bone => II cane mastica (sta masticando) l’osso The bone is being chewed by the dog. => L’osso é masticato dal cane L’ausiliare to be si trasforma in is being per mantenere |’aspetto continuo del verbo attivo (is chewing). Il verbo passa al participio, chewing -> chewed. John gave Mary a book => John diede un libro a Mary A book was given to Mary by John (oppure Mary was given a book by John) => Un libro fu dato a Mary da John Poiché gave é al passato nella forma attiva, il verbo to be viene coniugato al passato per il passivo inglese, quindi was. Il verbo va sempre al participio passato, gave -> given. The dog was chewing the bone => II cane masticava (stava masticando) l’osso The bone was being chewed by the dog => L’osso era masticato dal cane L’ausiliare to be mantiene la forma continua being come il verbo della frase attiva (chewing). John has given Mary a book => John ha dato un libro a Mary A book has been given to Mary by John (oppure Mary has been given a book (by John) ) => Un libro é stato dato a Mary da John L’ausiliare has non cambia ma al verbo to be si aggiunge il participio passato del present perfect (been). John had given a book to Mary => John aveva dato un libro a Mary A book had been given to Mary by John (oppure Mary had been given a book (by John) ) => Un libro era stato dato a Mary da John
