Lab #6 (36E-1,2), TITRATION WITH POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE, PREPARATION OF 0.02M OF POTAS- SIUM PERMANGANATE, AND STANDARDIZATION OF POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE SOLUTION RADU PURTUC QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS LAB, CHEM 213 Group # 5 Radu Purtuc Lavonne Salis Tunde Tamas Rafal Krejza Experiment Start Date: July 12, 2006 Experiment End Date: July 14, 2006 Report Due Date: July 17, 2006 PAGE 1 ANALYSIS The purpose of this experiment was to accomplish standardization titration of Potassium Permanganate against Sodium Oxalate solution of known concentration. This is an oxidation reduction reaction, thus there was no need for special indicators. PROCEDURE Clean and dry four Erlenmeyer flasks, four Burettes, two 200 mL beakers, and two 500 mL beakers, a spatula, and a glass rod. Record Lot Number of compounds used in this experiment: 0.02M KMnO4 Lot# 36M H2SO4 Lot# 2876 Na2C2O4 Lot# ** note “Ф” is the equivalent of a mole. Part A Preparation of Solutions 1. 1.0M H2SO4: mix 30.00 mL of 36M H2SO4 in 970.00 mL diH2O. M1V1=M2V2, final volume 1000mL 2. Na2C2O4 solution: dissolve 0.1340g Na2C2O4 in 250mL 1.0M H2SO4 3. 0.02M KMnO4 solution: dissolve 0.7902g KMnO4 in 250mL diH2O, stir well to dissolve until no visible particles settle at the bottom of flask 4. Blank solution: titrate 250.00 mL of 1.0M H2SO4 with KMnO4, endpoint reached within 1 drop = 0.05 mL. Final volumes corrected against blank as noted Part B Standardization of 0.02M KMnO4 against Na2C2SO4 solution of known concentration 1. Weighed 0.7902g KMnO4 and mixed with 250 mL of diH2O to give 0.02M KMnO4 2. Weighed 0.1340g Na2C2O4 and mixed it with 250.00 mL 1.0M H2SO4 3. Heated the solution to 80-90°C, then removed it from heat-plate and proceeded with titration 4. Titrated solution with KMnO4 of known exact molarity until solution reached endpoint (colorless to pink) 5. The final volumes were corrected against blank (-0.05mL) REAGENTS 0.02M KMnO4 35 M H2SO4 Lot# 2876 Na2C2O4 Distilled H2O WORK MANAGEMENT Radu was the group leader for this experiment. Tunde, Lavonne, and Rafal alternated between tasks so that one does a measurement while the other visually checked the results to ensure work efficiency while keeping determinant error to its lowest possible value. Rafal weighed Na2C2O4 while Radu watched for PAGE 2
