ECE 2000 – Spring 2004 Lab Construction Project Objectives: Obtain experience building an electronic circuit, learn about practical electronic components, learn how an electronic device functions, and gain experience describing how a device functions. Grading: 40% Quality of construction, including safety features, with emphasis on the quality of soldering 10% Demonstration that the device works 50% Paper describing the function and circuit operation of the device Lab Procedure: (1) Order an electronic kit, for a device of your choice, which contains at least ten electrical/electronic components. (2) Build the kit using quality construction and safety practices. (3) Demonstrate that the device works to the lab TA. (4) Figure out how the device works, using all the resources you can find. (5) Write an original paper describing the purpose and operation of the device and how the device works (as far as you can understand it at this point, based on your courses, experience, and reference works). No plagiarism is allowed – it will be checked! The body of the paper should be typed, 1 1/2 line spacing, 2-3 pages long excluding figures. Include proper references for all material used in the writing of the paper – you MUST use some references. Note that for web pages the reference should include all of the following (if available): title, author, affiliation, date published, URL, date accessed. (Unlike printed materials, many web pages move, are changed, or disappear. This information makes it much easier to search for the web page in the future.) The paper should show a logical development process with good organization. As always, proper English, grammar, and spelling are important. Include a copy of the schematic diagram in your report. Attach all documentation provided by the manufacturer. 1 Kit Title ___________________________ Manufacturer/Supplier ___________________ AC Safety Check by __________________ TA & Date Construction Quality ____________ points (40 max.) by __________________ TA & Date Problems observed: Demo Works __________________ points (10 max.) by __________________ TA & Date Problems observed: Student comments on kit (did you have problems? did you like it? would you recommend it to future students?): 2
