Name: _________________________ Period: _____________ Lab: M&M Kinetics or the Penny Decomposition NOTE: M&M's or Skittles may be substituted Procedure 1. Obtain 100 pennies, M&M’s or Skittles. 2. Obtain a reaction vessel (styrofoam cup). 3. Roll a die and record the reading. 4. Ten times the die will be the reaction time. 5. Place the pennies in the styrofoam cup and shake for the calculated reaction time. 6. Dump the pennies on a flat table and reject the pennies with the 'tails' showing. 7. Count the number of pennies remaining and place the value in the data table. 8. Place the remaining pennies back in the styrofoam cup and repeat steps 5 thru 7 for a total of 7 trials or until no pennies are returned to the cup. 9. Construct 3 graphs: a. ) Amt Present -vs- Time b.) ln(Amt) -vs- Time c. ) 1/Amt -vs- Time Name: _________________________ Period: _____________ Data/Calculations: Die: Reaction Time: seconds Trial No. Total Time (s) Amt. Present ln (Amt.) 1/Amt ΔAmt/ΔTime Calculated Amt 0 - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Rate Constant = s-1 Follow up: 1. Determine the order of the reaction based on the 3 graphs. 2. Write the rate law with the k 3. Calculate the half-life of the reaction half- life = .693/k = seconds 4. Calculate the ΔAmt/Δtime for trials 2-7. 5. Does the slope (rate) of the Amt vs Time graph change? 6. Using the Rate Constant, calculate the Amount that theoretically should exist.
