Physics 123 Sections 005/006 Laboratory and Recitation Instructor: Brandon Seilhan Office Hours: Mon 9:00-10:00 Email: bseilhan@iit.edu Tue 4:00-5:00 Webpage: http://www.iit.edu/~bseilhan Wed-Friday: by appointment Grading: Labs: 6@20pts each = 120 pts Recitation: 6@20pts each = 120 pts Total: 240 pts Laboratory Procedures Since there will not be enough setups for everyone to work alone you will work in a small group varying in size depending on the number of setups. Before you begin I will specify the sizes of acceptable groups. Lab reports will be completed during the Lab period. To receive credit for the Lab you must be present for the entire lab period (i.e. you must finish the entire lab). When the lab begins you must sign in on the sign in sheet and before you go you must “check out” with me. To “check out” of lab you must be able to explain what you just did. I will ask you a few questions (for example: why did you measure the mass of the cart before you started? Or what do the values plotted on your y-axis represent?) and you should be able to answer them. If you cannot answer them I will leave you and your group to figure out the answers and I will come back when you are ready. Lab Manuals can be found by going to http://www.iit.edu/~bcps and clicking on Resource Center then PHYS 123. Laboratory Grading Each Lab week you will have the opportunity to earn 20 points for lab, therefore your overall lab grade will be out of 120 points. Each week before lab you will receive a blank outline for the following week’s lab to aid in your report and you will be responsible for bringing this to lab. The 20 points are broken down as follows: Pre-lab quiz: 3 points At the beginning of each lab I will give a short quiz based on the lab manual. It will not be difficult, if you read and understand the lab manual before you come to lab (which is expected) you should have no problem answering the quiz question(s). Purpose: 3 points Describe the significance of the lab. What are we trying to show in this experiment? Setup / Procedure: 5 points Explain what you did in the lab. What did you measure? What did you physically do? Data / Analysis: 5 points Using your measurements, draw a conclusion. Show plots explicitly. Each number must have associated units. Conclusions: 4 points Draw Conclusions from your lab report. Where you’re calculated values exactly what you expected? If not, why? Recitation Procedures/Grading Recitation is your chance for me to answer any questions you may have from lecture, homework, and lab. I will go over the following week’s lab. It is critical that you attend recitation and pay attention since fairly regularly we will be doing labs based on material not yet covered in your lecture. During each recitation you can earn 20 points. To earn your points you must attend and participate in recitation. This may involve solving problems in a group or simply not disturbing others during class discussions. You must attend recitation to receive you points. Makeup Policy You may makeup one (1) missed lab at the end of the semester during the makeup week. If you know you are going to miss recitation, talk to me beforehand to work something out. Unless you have a valid excuse (medical, etc.) you will not be able to makeup missed recitations. Other Important Information • Lab Manuals can be found by going to http://www.iit.edu/~bcps and clicking on Resource Center then PHYS 123 • I will do everything I can (within reason) to help you with this class. While this shouldn’t be trivial you shouldn’t feel confused either. If you cannot make my office hours you can always make an appointment during another time. • You should have no questions about what I expect from you. If you do please ask me immediately. • You are encouraged / expected to ask questions during lab and recitation. Please do so; it will be a very boring semester if you just listen to me talk the whole time. • Occasionally in lab there may be an issues of safety that if violated will cause a loss of points. Academic Honesty: There will be a zero tolerance policy for academic dishonesty.
