Op Amp Laboratory Experiment: Building Amplifier and Signal Conditioning Circuits, Lab Reports of Engineering

The procedures for a laboratory experiment in bae 305 focused on using operational amplifiers (op amps) to construct basic amplifier and signal conditioning circuits. Students will learn about op amp performance limitations and gain experience measuring component values. Diagrams and instructions for constructing unity gain, moderate gain, high gain, voltage follower, integrating, and differentiating op amp circuits.

BAE 305 Laboratory Experiment 3 Op Amps PURPOSE: The purpose of this lab is to learn how to use op amps to construct basic amplifier and signal conditioning circuits and to discover performance limitations of the devices. Lab Notes: Be sure to measure the actual values of all resistors and capacitors to use in theoretical calculations. You should do this for all components from now through the rest of the semester. Check polarity of power supplies before connecting to the op amps. The diagram below shows the pinouts for the 8 pin DIP op amp chips we will be using in class. We will not be using the "Offset Null" pins for these labs. The Op Amp circuit diagrams included with these instructions include voltage divider resistor circuits. The only purpose of these circuits is to provide an adjustable voltage input to the amplifier circuit. They have no affect on the overall gain of the op-amp circuit. In fact, you may have to change the value of some of these components to make voltages swing as far as you would like. PRELAB: Several of the circuits mentioned in these procedures are not included in the laboratory instructions. Prepare diagrams of these circuits in you laboratory notebook before coming to lab. PROCEDURE: 1. Construct the unity gain inverting op amp circuit shown in Circuit 1. Drive the voltage divider (Vc) with the positive voltage supply. By adjusting the trim pot to effect the input voltage, collect Vo vs. Vi data for various points as you swing the output from 0V through its saturation point. Then switch the supply on the trim pot to the negative voltage supply and perform the same test. Get approximately 8 points on each side. Prepare a graph showing the lab data as scattered points around a line denoting the expected performance (consider actual resistor values). 2. Construct the moderate gain inverting op amp circuit shown in Circuit 2. Perform similar tests as in step 1.
