Laboratory Safety Essay Technology, Grand Canyon University CHm-101L: Introduction to General, Organic, and Biochemistry Lab 1 Have you ever been in a laboratory that is full of chemicals which are hazards to your life? If not, you should know being cautious and safe is always your number one priority.  The proper personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be worn in the laboratory at all times includes a lab coat, goggles, and gloves. The purpose of wearing a lab coat is to make sure the clothes underneath and body parts are protected from splashes, spills, and unexpected reactions. Goggles of any kind of eyewear which suction to your eyes and protect them fully are intended to protect you from any chemical splashing up and towards the eyes. Gloves are worn to protect the skin on your hands from absorbing chemicals, as well as chemical burns, thermal burns, and lacerations. Wearing these PPE is very crucial to staying safe in a chemical laboratory because it helps prevent accidents that happen in the lab from turning into worse accidents.  Potential hazards that students could face in a chemical laboratory setting are chemical burns and fires. An example of a chemical burn incident happening may be a student working with hydrochloric acid for the first time and they are attempting to measure out an ounce of it into a test tube, yet they are suddenly distracted by their classmate across the table who didn’t follow lab rules and had their phone out at the table. The acid container then slips out of the students’ hands and spills all over their lap, as well as splashing up towards their eyes. Luckily, the student had their goggles on, but they didn’t fully follow lab attire and wore leggings. Therefore, the acid burns through their leggings onto their bare skin and they are left with a chemical burn on their thighs. The student jumps up screaming, causing the table next to them to spill their chemicals on to an open outlet which sparks up and creates a massive fire. Therefore, you must always read and follow the laboratory safety rules given in the syllabus before coming to class! 2
