Stoichiometry Experiment: NaClO and KI Reaction, Lab Reports of Chemistry

This document details an experiment conducted by krysti nelson and annie moore in 2008 under the instruction of grandinetti to determine the stoichiometry of the reaction between sodium hypochlorite (naclo) and potassium iodide (ki) in aqueous solution. Experimental data, calculations, results, and conclusions, as well as a discussion of potential errors and experimental uncertainty.

Name: Krysti Nelson Partner: Annie Moore Date Performed: 10/16/2008 Date Submitted: 10/23/2008 Instructor: Grandinetti Stoichiometry Objectives: We will complete a reaction between Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and Potassium iodide (KI) in aqueous solution in order to figure out the stoichiometry of this exact reaction. Experimental Data: Volume of NaClO (mL) Volume of KI (mL) Temp. of NaClO (degrees C) Temp. of KI (degrees C) Final Temp. After Mixing (degrees C) 45 5 20.80 20.80 24.02 40 10 20.41 20.80 27.38 35 15 20.20 20.65 27.60 30 20 20.08 20.54 26.38 25 25 20.06 20.49 25.44 20 30 20.54 20.34 24.76 15 35 20.28 20.26 23.45 10 40 20.21 20.23 22.37 5 45 19.66 20.18 21.14 Sample Calculations:  Mole fraction of NaClO= (volume NaClO)/(volume NaClO +Volume KI) = (45 mL)/(45mL + 5mL) = 0.9  Initial temp. = ((20.80*45)+(20.80*5))/(45+5) = 20.80C  Delta temp. = (24.02) – (20.80) = 3.22C  Molarity of KI = 1- 0.75 = 0.25 Name: Krysti Nelson Partner: Annie Moore  Mole fraction of NaClO/KI = 0.75/0.25 = 3 Results and Conclusions: Volume NaClO (mL) Volume of KI (mL) Mole Fraction NaClO Initial Temp. For example, some of the temperature could have been lost to the environment. Also, there is room for human error. This includes spilling one or both of the samples before or after mixing them together. This would obviously alter the data; however, there is always the potential for human error to occur in each laboratory experiment. Definitions:  Stoichiometric coefficients- the coefficient by which the quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined.
