Language Of Research Technical Terms used on Research (Common Latin and Latin abbreviations used in research writing) Terminologies in Research Writing 1. Design - to plan or plan of how something will be made or done. 2. Data - collected facts of information. 3. Significance - important data and meaningful findings in research. 4. Evidence - observation or information that show whether something is true or false. 5. Treatment - the course of action design for research. 6. Experiment - a test to see what happens when all factors or variables but one is controlled. 7. Conclusion - a summary of what has been learned or been shown at the end of a study. 8. Observation - looking carefully at something. 9. Statistics - the organization and study of numerical data. et al (et alii) - "and others", abbreviates people in a list loc. cit. - Latin short for loco meaning "in the place cited" e.g. (exempligratia) - "for example" etc. - "and so on". One of the most common Latin abbreviations, tend to be overused by many. Note: Et means and, it is redundant to write "and etc." The Latin phrase literally means "and other things" Ib/ibid/ibidem - "in the same passage or page quoted above" or literally mean " in the same place" Citato - footnote or endnote term used to repeat the title and page number for a given work (and author). Loc when the reference is not only to the work immediately preceding, but also refer. Abstract a brief summary of a research project and its findings. Describes its most important aspects including major results and conclusions. Assumption any important assertion presumed to be true but not actually verified. (Major assumption should be described in one of the first sections of a research proposal or report.)
