LAST BREATH BY SAM KAHIGA TITLE • Last breath – usually refers to someone’s death or someone sticking to his point/opinion. • Turning point depends on both meanings of the last breath • It is effective because…… PLOT… • Introduction: The narrator is deeply in love with Eva, who is blind • Rising action : He is angry because his father wants to prevent his marriage to Eva • The son refuses to accept his father’s opposition • Mother > informs her son about his father’s desperate health condition (Lung Cancer) • Climax: narrator proposed to Eva – • She asked him to wait as she was about to undergo an operation which might restore her eyesight. • She was about to receive corneas from a near-death organ donor. • Denouement: Reveals why Eva is able to see again, his father donated his corneas to her with his last breath CHARACTERS: • NARRATOR: • Key character in the story – centre of events • passionate love and admiration for Eva • a very determined person: • does not allow his father to dictate whom he has to marry • He gave Eva a cheap copper ring instead of a shiny diamond ring. • He is not prepared to compromise • He won’t have anything standing in his way • Ultimately, he sees his father in a different light as he becomes aware of his father’s sacrifice. • “You always had a kind heart…” CHARACTERS… • FATHER: • Changed to an extent: (from an opposer to helper/donor) • His opposition to his son’s marriage – thinking of his son’s welfare • When challenged to “give her eyes” he comes to a brave decision. • He donated his corneas to Eva for her to regain her eyesight
