By: Reygena Aranil Above all the circumstances, such as limited time and the fact that there are so many classes that will be affected, we ought to still have our half-day seminar about teaching science in elementary grades, most specifically biology and chemistry. This seminar was attended by BEED students and was held on October 30, 2019, at BUCE Training Hall 1, which is led by guest speaker Teacher Edielyn Baraquillo. The talk started by asking questions about what we expected in the seminar. Through this inquiry, the teacher could see if the student's expectations match what she will be discussing. Then, after the questioning, she presented the objectives of what we were going to achieve for today's discussion. The speaker set the mood of the seminar by using one of Douglas Brown's principles, which is the anticipation of reward, where the class ought to participate well and be motivated because she provided educational key chains that emphasize #parasabata. The next activity ought to assess the prior knowledge of the students, wherein the teacher gives a piece of paper with a given letter, which will be a clue in answering what specific topic we discussed during our elementary days. Then, after we answer the question in the paper, she asks letter by letter what topic or concept we remembered and also gives a brief explanation of some concepts. After all the motivation and recall of the speaker, we started to discuss the Understanding Science K–12 Curriculum Framework and the Curriculum Guide. She stated that she would present the curriculum framework to the class by stating one by one what is in the curriculum framework. Then she ought to discuss the spiral progression, which means teaching and learning from basic to complex, where it can be in the form of chunking the lesson in order to teach the child to have some knowledge of a specific topic so that if this topic is discussed in the next school year, the student will have some background knowledge about it. Teacher Baraquillo also presents the current curriculum features of the K–12 curriculum, which emphasize student-centeredness, spiral progression, integrative, evidence-based, culture-sensitive, and inquiry-based. She also explained the sequence of domains or strands per quarter. And through this, we could learn and be guided if we were going to make a lesson plan.
