Economic Dimension Class: grouping of people according to their economic position / “market situation” The Most Important Class Distinction: Propertied & Propertyless There are significant distinctions within each class: Propertied elite: Market Situation Labor (Job) Market Money (Securities) Market Commodity Market Propertyless: Occupational Skills Class Consciousness: emerges under the right circumstances. b. Status Dimension / “Status honor” Status Group: group of people according to their prestige, grounded in the prevailing values, beliefs, and ideals of the society. Shared Identity: members of a status group generally think of themselves as a social community, with a common lifestyle. Restrictions on social intercourse / status group closure: restrict relations (friendship, marriage, etc.) within the group. c. Power Dimension Party: Group or association organized for the pursuit of power. “rational order”. Interests: class, status, other. Wide range of methods to gain power abc. 1. Large degree of overlap among the three; 2. Not of equal importance in human societies; 3. Inequality and conflict pervasive and enduring.
