The Gratitude Exercise: Expressing Appreciation and Its Impact on Wellbeing - Prof. Willia, Study notes of Psychology

An assignment for a psychology journal where students are asked to write a letter expressing gratitude to someone who has significantly impacted their lives but whom they have not yet thanked. The exercise involves writing the letter by hand and deciding whether to send it, send it as a message, or speak to the person in person. Students are required to write about their experiences with the exercise, focusing on how it affected their emotions and perception of the other person and themselves.

JOURNAL #7– PSY 4460/5460 THE GRATITUDE EXERCISE For this journal, I’d like you to think about someone who has done you a great service. Think of someone to whom you owe a debt of gratitude. Further, this should be a person to whom you have never expressed your gratitude. For this journal please write a letter to this person and tell her/him how much you appreciate what they have done for you. Let them know how much their support, encouragement, or caring has meant to you. Many people believe that this exercise is enhanced if your actually write the letter by hand (i.e. no word processor). Now that you have written the letter, you can (1.) decide not to send the letter, (2.) send the letter, or (3.) talk to the person face-to-face and tell them what is in the letter. I should mention that the original “Gratitude Exercise” as developed by Martin Seligman requires you to speak face-to-face with the other person. For your journal submission, please write about your experiences with this exercise. How did it make you feel? How did it change the way you looked at the other person? Looked at yourself? Did it make you want to do anything special? Please write 250-300 words on one page about how you felt during the exercise. I do not need to know what you wrote in your letter or what the other person did. Of course, you can include these if you wish. However, be sure to write about what the exercise did or didn’t do for your sense of well- being. Journal is due by 10:0 on Wed. May 8th. Have fun!
