Sikhism: A Monotheistic Religion with Emphasis on Universalism and Daily Spirituality - Pr, Study notes of Anthropology of religion

This chapter provides an overview of sikhism, the fifth largest religion with approximately 23 million followers. Originating in northwest india during the 16th century, sikhism was influenced by hindu bhakti and islamic sufism. The religion emphasizes monotheism, some values from islam, and the concept of karma and reincarnation from hinduism. Sikhism is characterized by its reform movement, which promotes universalist spirituality and spirituality in daily life. The three cardinal virtues of sikhism are earning an honest living, sharing, and remembering god in all activities. The religion also values equality, as people should not be separated by caste, creed, race, or gender. The adi granth, a collection of writings from gurus, hymns, and poems towards god, is considered the guru and guide for sikhs. The 5 k's, jap ji, and the communal eating of langar in gurdwaras are essential aspects of sikhism.
