Open the attribute table for wells there are two attribute fields labeled GROUP and WELL_TYPE where can you find a description of the values in these fields? Correct! Return to the Illinois Natural Resources Clearinghouse Click on FGDC metadata icon for wells Click on Entity and Attribute Information Using a relational database query to create a layer. For the rest of this exercise we will only be concerned with the wells that are type water well, so you need to select these water wells out of the wells layer and create a new layer that contains only water wells. To select water wells, you create a select by attribute query expression. In the Attribute Table, Click on Options, Select by Attributes Double-click “group” in the Fields window Click on = in the operators window (there are two types of operators - relational and Boolean) Double-click 31 in the Unique Values window Click Apply and the selected records change color in the Attribute Table and the wells in the view are shown in your selection color. aD

Open the streams attribute table Which fields are important to differentiate the types of streams in Champaign county? Where can you find this information? Open the Attribute Table for fldzones. What are the possible values for flood zones? Here is an example of a very common problem when converting ArcInfo coverages to shape files. Note the name of the field POINT_. Does POINT_ sound like the proper name for this field? No. Also, note that the field name has been truncated after the _. Remember last week when we defined fields, they have a type (integer, character, decimal, etc.) and also a length. The field name was too long in the coverage for the length in the shape file. Happens all the time….. Remember to refer back to your metadata! Spatial Selection Query Expressions You need to create a spatial query expression to select water wells that are within the boundary of a flood zone. We won’t worry about whether it’s a 55, 100 or 500 year event. Click on the Selection dropdown menu Click on Select by Location I want to: select features from water_wells (click in the little box) that: are completely within the features in this layer: fldzones (click in the little box) Click Apply aD
