LIDL Kamaljit Kaur, 32 Customer Assistant, Lidl Constructing Leicester is an initiative led by the council, which aims to ensure that local people have the skills and the opportunity to access employment generated from major new developments - such as the new Lidl store on Fosse Road North, which has created 10 jobs. The council worked with Lidl, Jobcentre Plus and Leicester College’s Retail Academy to give local people who were ready for work and receiving benefits the right skills to secure employment at the store. Looking for a job had become a long process for Kamaljit and she always felt she failed at the interview stage. Kamaljit was introduced to the pre-employment programme via the Job Centre. “The pre-employment programme helped me with my confidence and enabled me to approach interviews, filling out application forms better.” Kamajit passed two interviews and a practical test to secure employment at Lidl. Doing the pre-employment programme and gaining employment has helped Kamaljit realise what her strengths are and work on her weaknesses to continue to improve. “Getting the job at Lidl has made me really happy and changed my life. I thoroughly enjoy working at Lidl in all aspects of the job from customer service, shop floor to working on the tills.” “I am really grateful to Job Centre and Leicester College for giving me the opportunity to complete the course and go on to get a job.” ends
