Women in the early 20th century did their work inside the home. There were not many women that worked outside of the home because during that time it was mostly men that worked outside of the home. Women entering the paid labor market has helped with the prosperity of America. Despite this, there are women that are unable to reach career goals, and the discrimination that women face in regards to pay is significant. “The gap in earnings between men and women has narrowed substantially, but progress has slowed lately, and women working full time still earn about 17 percent less than men, on average, each week” (Yellen, 2020). Women are having to also combine their aspirations for having a career and a family which also makes it challenging for women to reach their career goals. There is still about a ten percent gap that remains between men and women even when they are in the same occupation, and have the same experience and background. “President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009”. This act was signed to make sure that employees are not discriminated against and are paid fairly. The aim of this paper is to discuss the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the historical and constitutional background of the Act, checks and balances, public policy, media and elections regarding the Act, and how the Act impacts the voting and election process. The next section will begin with the historical and constitutional background of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Historical and Constitutional Background As stated earlier, women have made significant progress regarding entering out of home working.
