By: Devin Hunt What legacy and computational effects make this virtual space feel real? There are two prime factors that allow this text-relayed space to aquire a realistic sense. First, the descriptions of the areas allow the user to his his/her imagination to create the space in their mind. The simple but descriptive summaries of each space leave enough freedom to the user to choose the way he/she composes the space in the mind but are defined enough to give the mind space a specific bound; in this case, north, south, east, west, &c. Secondly, the ability to move around the spaces in all types of manners gives the space volume and form. Form the text into a three dimension space. How do you know where you are? Simply by memory and exploration. The world of Zork is vast for a text game. Players can easily get lost in the game world, which is usually meant to happen. It lends the virtual space a much larger feel. How do you know the current location to your previous location? The player’s relative position is relayed by the description of the possible paths. Phrase in the form of “you are on a north-south path” transform into “there is a small path leading south” if you take the original path north. This gives the payer a reference, even if it is only or adjacent sections. A player can quickly get used to this mindset. What objects and possible events do you expect to find in these spaces? What produces these expectations? At first, it is quite unclear what to expect with this game. Once the player finds the egg in the Forest Path it is clear this is a noble fantasy game. The glowing eleven sword and the ‘grue’ lead the player to expect for fantastic objects, enemies to appear.
