Who did God send to rescue the world? 2. Why do you think He sent a baby instead of using someone big and powerful? Bible Exploration: The Birth of Jesus – Luke 1:26-2:21 Who is the Greatest – Matthew 18:1-4, Luke 9:46-48 Upside Down Kingdom – The Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5:1-11 Love Does for Kids Chapter 1 – Mistakes 1. Bob talks about making a mistake as a kid when he was the “Wake Up Fairy” in class. His mistake cost him the opportunity to continue his job. Has something like that ever happened to you? Have you ever tried your hardest to do the right thing, but messed up anyway? 2. What kinds of people did Jesus choose to hang out with? Why do you think Jesus chose them? 3. Who do you believe God wants you to become? Bible Exploration: What does the Bible teach us about God’s love? Find verses that describe His love for us. Write down what truth you learn from the verse. Example: Truth - He loves us even when we aren’t perfect Verse – Romans 5:8 – but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Love Does for Kids Chapter 3 – Words of Life 1. Can you think of a time when someone spoke words of life to you? How did that make you feel? 2. Bob says that some words may not mean much on their own. He says, “words spoken with ____________ at just the right moment, these words have the power to change everything.” What does it mean to speak words in this way? Bible Exploration: • Jesus predicts Peter’s denial – Matthew 26:30-35 • Peter denies Jesus – Matthew 26:69-75 • Jesus renames Simon to Peter & tells him that he is the rock that he will build His church on – Matthew 16:13-19 • Jesus & Peter – John 21:15-19 • Read more from Peter and about his ministry in Acts, 1st Peter & 2nd Peter Note: Bob Goff incorrectly states that Jesus named Peter “rock” and declared he would build his church on him following the resurrection. We see in scripture, this actually occurs during Jesus’ ministry. However, we do see in John 21, Jesus makes sure that He restores His relationship with Peter. Here he asks Peter 3 times to declare his love for Him and commands him to “Feed my lambs,” “Tend my sheep,” and “Feed my sheep.” Love Does for Kids Chapter 4 – Shiny Pennies 1. Look up the definition of Grace in the dictionary (or on dictionary.com). 2. Tell about a time when you deserved a certain punishment or consequence but were given grace instead. How did that make you feel? 3. How can you give grace to someone in your life? 4. Why should we extend grace to others? Bible Exploration: • Grace is a theme throughout the entire Bible. You can find examples of God’s grace in every book. This week, look at the story of the prodigal son as an example of how we can extend grace to others (Luke 15:11-32). • Challenge your child to find examples of God’s grace as they read their Bibles this week. Love Does for Kids Chapter 5 – I’m With You 1. Who do you know that is always with you when you need someone you can count on? 2. How does Bob say we can help our friends when they aren’t sure who they are or where they are going? Bible Exploration: • Jesus is called by many names in the Bible. Which one means that he is with us? • Jesus tells his disciples that a helper would come in His place. Who is the Helper? (John 14:15-31) • What does Jesus tell them the Helper will do? (vs. 26) Love Does for Kids Chapter 8 – Pictures in a Wallet 1. What would you put a picture of in your wallet? 2. Where can we look to find out what God wants to tell us? Bible Exploration: • There are many different types of books in the Bible. Some of the different styles (known as genres) are poetry, law, wisdom literature, parables & letters (just to name a few). Can you find out how many letters (also known as the Epistles) are in the Bible? Once you find out how many there are, list the names of those books. What are some clues you can look for when reading the Bible to identify these as letters? Love Does for Kids Chapter 9 – Unicycle 1. What act would you do if your class was putting on a carnival? Is this something you already know how to do or would you learn just for the carnival? What would make you want to learn a new skill for something like a school carnival? 2. What is something you could do to show someone the love of Jesus this week? Try to think of something that you aren’t very good at yet instead of something that comes easily for you. Do you think you should wait until you master loving people that way or should you just show love? Bible Exploration: • Read Exodus chapter 3. God comes to Moses in a burning bush and tells Moses that he has heard Israel groaning (they were in captivity in Egypt). God was sending Moses in to talk to the Pharaoh and set his people free. What was the reaction of Moses? Did it matter that Moses didn’t feel qualified for the job? Why or why not? Love Does for Kids Chapter 10 – See a Little More 1. What kind of injury or setback have you suffered from? Where you impatient to get back to normal? 2. Bob tells us that God wants to heal us inside too, not just physically. Why do you think healing our insides matters to God? Bible Exploration: • When Bob talks about “seeing a little more,” I can’t help but think of how this is true when studying our Bibles. Have you ever noticed that you can read a story you’ve heard a hundred times and God can reveal something new to you? This week, read through stories you are familiar with (Noah & the Ark, David & Goliath, Jesus feeding the 5,000….). Make note of any new details you learn this week when reading them – something you hadn’t noticed before. We are never done studying our Bibles. No matter how old we are or how many times we’ve read it, God desires to teach us new things.
