Assessment Introduction Each of you have already had considerable experience with assessment. You are tested in most classes in elementary, preparatory, and secondary school. Now it is time to start thinking of assessment from the teacher’s point of view. Technical and Professional Vocabulary 2. Evaluation: Interpreting and making judgments about assessment information. Technical and Professional Vocabulary How are assessment and evaluation related? Evaluation always accompanies assessment. The assessment process reveals what a student understand, know, and can do. The evaluation process indicates the quality of performance based on the curriculum (learner outcomes.) Technical and Professional Vocabulary 3. Tests: A test is a set of questions that all students must answer in a fixed period of time and under similar conditions to demonstrate learning. In practice, giving a test is assessment (collecting data on particular student), while assigning grade or mark is evaluation. Purposes of Classroom Assessment 3. For formative evaluation. To monitor learning progress, provide feedback to reinforce learning, correct learning errors. 4. For summative evaluation. To determine final achievement for assigning grades or certifying mastery. Areas Teachers Asses 1. Knowledge (facts concepts,…etc.) 2. Skills (physical, social, thinking, problem solving,…etc.) 3. Affect (attitudes, interests, and values.( Types of Assessment The three main types of assessment in use today are standardized tests, teacher- made tests, and alternative forms of assessment. Types of Assessment Alternative Assessment Any method that differs from traditional paper and pencil tests especially objective tests. Some teachers call it authentic or performance assessment Types of Assessment Performance Assessment It is an assessment that requires students to construct a response, create a product, or demonstrate a skill they have acquired. Rubrics, based on selected criteria, are given to students to ensure that they know what they need to do to meet or exceed the learner outcomes.
