It is a known fact that every galaxy in the visible universe is moving away from our own galaxy at a measurable rate (hence the universe is expanding). This was first observed by the astronomer Edwin Hubble in the early 1900’s when he compared the individual distances to nearby galaxies and the rate at which they were receding from our own galaxy. The resulting relationship is known as Hubble’s Law and is often cited as the main piece of evidence in support of the Big Bang theory. 1
