EDU 6610 Teacher as Professional EDU 6610 When thinking of what it means to be a professional educator, examining core values such as committing to making sure all students are learning, creating a diverse learning environment, being an advocate for all students, and maintain equitable access to technology and other academic resources all come in to play. One of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards’ five core propositions is for educators to be committed to the learning and success of all of students (Walden, 2016). Being committed to the learning and success of all students means that as a teacher you have to continue your education in order to successfully convey all standards to students. Participating in professional learning will ensure that teachers are prepared to tackle the responsibility of making sure differentiation is done to the best ability possible. Differentiating will allow each student to learn and ensure success. Being an advocate for students also plays a huge role in professionalism as teacher. Understanding each of the students in a classroom on both an educational and an emotional level is important to the success of students. Creating a trusting relationship allows students to feel as though they are in a safe learning environment. Often children do not have a stable supportive person in the home that can assist in giving educational support. Because of this, it is important to understand the background of each student. Creating an environment that embodies all cultural and diverse possibilities will show students that the teacher is advocating for them. Being an advocate also brings technology support into play. Technology plays an extremely important role in education these days. Having access to technology is important both at home and at school. A challenge currently facing the educational world is making sure that all students have accessibility to the technical equipment needed to succeed. While this is considered a bump in the road, making sure that students have technology, are familiar with online learning such as google classroom, and teaching online resources such as Padlet and boom cards will allow students success both at home and in the classroom. Technology is not just a wave of the future and is becoming one of the most important features in student learning. As we move forward in the 21st century student centered learning is becoming more important. Student centered learning is driven towards bringing both the classroom and student to life (Moye, 2010). With student centered learning the teacher becomes more of an assistant while the students work in groups to learn and successfully understand each standard and lesson. This concept often shows the strengths of each student and provides a non-threatening environment where students are able to meet higher critical thinking levels. Because students of mixed levels are al learning together, all social structures are broken down. Because of this, the end result is higher self esteem in students, more effective communication skills, and unifying more diverse students. Through this approach a one size fits all type of curriculum will not work. This is where one of the five propositions will have an effect in the classroom. In order to be successful, the student teacher alike will have to build a trusting relationship. Building a relationship with the student is imperative due to respect fostering respect. A teacher that is truly passionate about teaching will be evident. The love of the job will be evident, and students will be treated like they are alive (Moye, 2010).
