You are to describe the purpose or From the Syllabus objective of the laboratory experiment. This should be a brief but complete statement of what you intend to discover or verify in the experiment and how you intend to do so. Equipment List. List all equipment used, including name, model and serial numbers, for the experiment. This allows for equipment to be located if discrepancies develop in the results. Component List. List all the components and sensors/transducers used. Formal Lab Report Format (cont.) Page Three and beyond: The report format should generally follow the lab handout but should also include the following items when appropriate. Theory. A brief treatise is to be included which should detail any theoretical derivations that may be appropriate. (i.e. ‐ a formula derivation) Schematics / Drawings / Experimental Setup. Schematics, electrical drawings, etc. are an essential part of any engineering work. The experimental setup should be shown so as to ease repeatability. They should include parts list and their designations. Submitted drawings and graphs are to be neat and clearly labeled. Formal Lab Report Format (cont.) Procedure/Data Collection. Detail briefly, the procedure used for data collection. Calculations. Include pertinent computations as part of your report. If several calculations are required, be specific and label the results accordingly. Results Summary. One of the primary objectives of laboratory work is to clarify theory and indicate when and how well it applies in practical situations. Therefore, plot theoretical an experimental results on the same graph whenever possible, clearly showing which is which. If only a few points are to be compared and a graph does not seem appropriate, adjacent tables of results make it easy to see the correlation between theory and experimental outcomes. Formal Lab Report Format (cont.) The Last Page: Conclusions/Discussion. Include reasons for discrepancies between theoretical versus experimental results. Analyze quantitative data. Include any brief proposals for future investigations whenever appropriate. Include any general comments as needed.
