Activity 3: Information Ethics Given below are hypothetical situations that require your unbiased opinion and educated judgment. Write your point of view as to each situation, taking into consideration the following mechanics in grading this activity: 1. You are researching on an assignment in your subject in Media and Information Literacy. You came along an article online that amazingly can answer the research assignment perfectly well. You copy and pasted it into one great essay, complete with pictures and other visuals. You did not cite your references in order to impress your perfectionist and strict teacher. Answer: For me, first, you must evaluate if that online article is related to the task given by your teacher, because there are things in online you thought correct but it is not. This could damage the image of yourself and your reputation in school. So, students are really not encouraged to copy online, instead, just write what you have in mind and be honest on your work. Another thing is that, copying the work of others is a crime. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), plagiarism is considered as a crime and punishable under the Cybercrime Prevention Act, which was signed by Benigno Aquino III on September 12, 2012. It corresponds to the copy infringement of Intellectual property code that is one of the special laws of Cybercrime Prevention Act. Copying other’s work (intellectual property) doesn’t give you a good impression at all; instead, it will embarrass you for having a copied version of a said property. This only proved that you are lacked of confidence on your uniqueness and does not value your own efforts and strengths. 2. A family friend, who also happens to be your classmate in one of your classes, was diagnosed with an incurable illness. Your close family ties enabled you to know the status of her health, including its severity, and asked you to refrain from spilling out the information outside of your family circle. In order to help her with her absences and academic standing, you told your class adviser about her health status. 10 Answer: For me, even though you are a friend or not, confidential matters must be kept confidentially. We all deserve that privacy on our own. But since, someone shared it to you about his/her confidential information; you must take responsibility to it as another keeper on the certain information. That means he/she trusted you, but this still means you don’t have an authority to decide whether to share it or not. As for the situation above, instead of approaching directly to your teacher, you must first ask advice to your parents, or, as possible you could directly tell the parents of your classmate on her situation in school. In the end, you will not take any responsibility on her situation since you kept the promise you’ve made and the decision already lies on her parents about her current situation in school. You are living in a peaceful community within your barangay where everyone practically knows everyone. Lately, there have been rumors circulating around the neighborhood that one of your friends is into illegal drugs. Upon investigation and personal interview, you found out that he is actually using marijuana because of an emotional problem within his family. You decided to help him by enlisting the help of psychologists and authorities in order to help him rehabilitate and cope with the problem. True enough, he was sent to a rehabilitation center in order to undergo debriefing. The news spread like wildfire within the neighborhood and soon, his family’s problems was then discussed out in the open. Your friend’s family have branded you a traitor for helping the “arrest” of your friend and ultimately revealing their problems to the entire neighborhood. Answer: We all know that using marijuana and other illegal drugs are prohibited here in Philippines because of its dangerous effects on the human body. it has many laws regarding to this issue ,and the government remains eager in implementing this law. Based on the situation, my friend uses marijuana as a treatment for his emotional problem, which is actually reasonable because according to the Food and drug administration (FDA) in the USA, marijuana has a property of cannabinoids, which could heal illnesses and symptoms. But since, he used marijuana he must be jailed and treated. And, indeed, he got arrested and got treated through rehabilitation with psychologist, but still called as drug user. Even his friend who was trying to help was also judged by a closed minded people. The only problem here is 11 that people tend to judge the bad side of the person’s story and did not know the true story behind that bad side.
