Most Essential Learning Competencies 1. Describes how communication is affected by media and information. 2. Identifies the similarities and differences of media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy. 3. Editorializes the value of being a media and information literate individual. 4. Identifies characteristics /describes a responsible uses and competent producers of media and information. Content: Introduction to Media and Information Literacy ACTIVITY 1. LET’S TRY THIS! Instruction. Think of some words that are related to Media and Information Literacy. Write the words inside the circles and answer the process questions. Process Questions: 1. Through the words you provided, how can you define Media and Information Literacy? 2. How important is Media and Information Literacy to an individual? Media and Information Literacy An essential component of digital literacy is deep learning which has six core skills: 1. Character – It includes traits such as grit, tenacity, perseverance, and resilience, with a desire to make learning an integral part of living. 2. Citizenship – It is the ability to consider issues and solve complex problems based on a deep understanding of diverse values and a worldview. 3. Collaboration – It is the ability to work collaboratively with others with strong interpersonal and team-related skills. 4. Communication – It is communicating effectively through a variety of methods and tools to a range of different audience. 5. Creativity – It is the ability to weigh up opportunities in an entrepreneurial manner and ask the right questions to generate new ideas. 6. Critical Thinking – This skill refers to the ability to evaluate information and arguments, identify patterns and connections, and construct meaningful knowledge, and apply it in the real world. MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY Having both media and information literacy are valued as an important ability in the current state of society. The combination of the competencies that can be gained from both media literacy and information literacy is what makes up Media and Information Literacy, or MIL. Media and Information Literacy is starting to acknowledged as a critical element in good governance and accountability. This could be attributed to the advancements in technologies, which played a part in being a contributor to a changing media landscape and new forms of citizen engagement. Important abilities and communication skills that enable public and citizens to effectively access, analyze, and evaluate information are required to thrive in this environment. THINGS TO REMEMBER  Media refers to any channel of communication used to transmit messages.  Literacy refer to the ability to read and write, or knowledge of a particular subject.  Media Literacy is the ability to analyze and synthesize the symbols and messages through media.  Information Literacy is the ability to recognize, evaluate, and use information when needed.  Digital Literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, use, share, and make content with the tools provided by the internet.  The combination of the competencies that can be gained from both media literacy and information literacy is what makes up Media and Information Literacy, or MIL. ACTIVITY 2. THINK CRITICALLY Instruction. Answer the following questions. Please elaborate your answers. 1. How communication is affected by media and information? 2.
