Running head: Amazon Warehouse Manager 1 Team Management Activity and Reflection MGT 330 Management for Organizations Amazon Warehouse Manager 2 Team Management Activity and Reflection I have been working for Amazon the past two years as a packer, I have grown in my position. I completed my degree program for a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the Forbes School of Business and Technology at Ashford University. Since being at Amazon I am considered one of the best employees being a hard worker and all my orders are packed correctly. All of my hard work has paid off and I have been promoted to manager at a new warehouse, where I will oversee a team of 10 supervisors and 90 packers. Finally, I will now figure out how to use the five functions of management planning, organizing, staffing leading, and controls to be a great manager and to help the employees grow like I did. In the planning stage, which is the most important function of being a manager. Yes all five functions are important, but if you have not planned out what you need to do to be successful none of the other functions would be able to be performed. “First, I would have the supervisors, with the assistance of their employees, complete a SWOT to get first-hand knowledge of the processes from top to bottom. As a manager, I believe this is the best way I can access the skills, education, and abilities of my first line supervisors and all employees” (Baack, Reilly, & Minnick, 2014). Next, I would use my knowledge of being a packer and what I learned from my degree program to help build a work environment that both packers and supervisors would feel appreciated and that they could come to me with any concerns. Finally, some of my strengths I had from my previous position I will take the SWOT analysis from each supervisor and combine them together and discuss with the whole team to show the overall operations within the company to help promote a positive work environment and everyone knows the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats they might have to deal with. Amazon Warehouse Manager 5 expectations that are measureable will help me create relationships with the employees so we can all succeed together as a team as stated by Locke’s goal setting theory. Finally, I will make sure to always stay involved with what is going on with the company and the employees, because I feel the best leaders are the ones that stay engaged and listen to their employees and not just sit in my office while my employees deal with the everyday stresses. The last of the five functions is control. Control is a cornerstone in a company to continuously maintain a smooth operation and stability. It is harder in a warehouse company then is other office type companies because you have to make sure you have the supplies needed to complete a product or to pack and order correctly. “There are four stages in this control process: establishing methods and standards, evaluating performance, establishing whether performance matches criteria and taking the corrective action” (Baack, Reilly, & Minnick, 2014). To maintain the four stages of the control process I will implement quality control procedures that specifically layout each step of the process and what the outcome should be. Also whenever you implement quality control you have to then put quality audits in place as well so you can make sure everything is running like it should and that if there are errors they are caught before it goes out to another company or a customer. This will also help when the employees sit with their managers to go over their performance appraisal they can document the amount of errors they had or lack thereof or if you are an auditor you can point out how many mistakes you caught to make sure your company is running as best they can. In conclusion, with being promoted to warehouse manager with Amazon I have completed my plan on how I would run the new warehouse. It helps when you outline using the five functions of management: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and control. With the knowledge I have from being an employee as a packer for the past two years helped guide me to Amazon Warehouse Manager 6 know what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to change how I would run my own warehouse. It helps to work your way up because then you know what the job is like that you are hiring for and you can also relate when they come to you with an issue or a suggestion since you had already worked it. With using the five management functions and my past experience it will only help the new warehouse and its employees grow, succeed, and still keep the Amazon brand in good standings.
