Earth Science 1 Midterm Study Guide Lectures Covered Book Chapters Aug. 18th-Sept. 8th 1,2,10, and 11 The test will be mostly multiple-choice. The test will be timed and you will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to take the exam. The exam date is Sept 13th at 9:30 am. There are several things on the list. Start slow in work on it in pieces if you need too. This IS NOT everything on the exam exactly, but it is a broad overview of topics you should study in detail from this section of the class. If you don’t understand something on here, or some part of how something works, or anything PLEASE ask. Your exam grades are the basis for your overall course grade, so doing well on them is the only way to do well in the course! Look at the key words for each chapter, if you don’t know one or more of the terms look it up and study that. Knowing and understanding the terms should help you a lot in understanding the concepts. Know each of the following topic and the details involved. Why study geology • Why do we study geology? • What kinds of jobs can you get as a geologist? • The key to the past is the _____. And the key to the present is the _____. How was the solar system/earth formed? • What are the theories of how the planet and the universe were created? • What proof do we have about the main theory? • How was the Earth formed? • What evidence do we have to support this? • What galaxy are we a part of? Be able to understand galaxies, solar systems, and our particular solar system. • What was early Earth like? • What is the currently accepted theory about how the moon was formed? • What is the criteria to be a planet? • What is the difference between Jovian (a term from your book) and terrestrial planets? • What makes Earth so special? Inner Earth/Earth Composition • What are the 4 layers of the Earth, what are they made of? • How do we know what they are made of? i.e. understand both density issues (material) and state of matter (liquid, solid, gas) issues.
