MIS490 MIS-490 Capstone Scenario Two: Reflection Southern, Lecture notes of Accounting

MIS490 MIS-490 Capstone Scenario Two: Reflection Southern New Hampshire University The journey through this course had some interesting twist and turns, excitement and disappointments, anxiety, and relief. After being out of an educational setting for more than 30 years, I finally got the courage to enroll at Southern New Hampshire. The chosen field of study for me was IT/ MIS, because I knew absolutely nothing about this field and could barely manage to turn on a computer. As the classes begin to pass by, I had noticed a little more confidence and was starting to use programs and understand what I was reading. After year three, I was able to download data, clean, and most importantly able to make sense of what the data was saying. This skillset is in high demand in the job market and could allow me to be an asset to any organization, as well as secure my financial future. Some of the obstacles that I had to overcome were overwhelming at times, however the instructors and academic advisors were so patient and understanding. From personal health and family issues, failing to understand the materials needed to pass a course, to not have access to the VDI (MIS 350) until week 6, somehow, I had overcome those obstacles to reach the pinnacle of my journey. As an older student, I have learned that life does not always go as planned and thinking outside the box or thinking of a way to find a solution to a problem builds character. I was able to complete the material required to pass the course, and that is what SNHU has helped me achieve. I now have the knowledge and confidence to solve problems even when there appears to be no way to complete them. The education that I have received from SNHU, has made me a better man, better father, and helped me learn a skillset that will be in demand for years to come. I used to feel uncomfortable talking to people because I did not think I was educated enough to hold a conversation, I would most time sit on the sidelines and just listen. Now I am assertive and can speak and think like an educated man. During my learning of the MIS field, I have become stronger at analyzing information. Researching deep into information to find a solution to a problem both from a positive and negative aspect. Allowing the information (data) to tell me what is going on, rather than making assumptions. For example, in my final project I chose the IT high priority tickets to research. In this data it would be easy to dismiss uncontrollable issues as the problem of the longer than normal resolve times. However, when you dig deeper, some of these resolve times are due to failed systems or hardware which take some time to procure and set up. In my current employment as a facilities director, I have implemented Power BI with my quarterly reports to create visuals for the stakeholders. These reports consisted of cost analysis, man hours, wasted time, procurement, and regulatory commitments. The stakeholders were so impressed with the details, they had approached me to see if I could look at the positives and negatives to expanding their facilities on the East coast. I have completed the enterprise level report and the organization has decided to expand its footprint on the East coast by 26 sites. The data revealed that Medicare pays higher than private insurance, and multiple sites could increase our profitability by 40% if we keep occupancy at 90% instead of letting these patients go to a different rehab center. I would not have been able to do this three years ago. This has increased my value to the company and are now considering me for a regional position. Ensuring data integrity, protection and how I would use the data is important in the business industry. For starters data accuracy is important because businesses make decisions based on the fact the data at hand is accurate. If it is not, the business will waste resources, time, and more important money, this could also affect their reputation. The data should be accurate, complete, and of high quality. According to McKinsey’s Data-matic’s survey, “data driven organizations are more than 23 times likely to outperform their competitors” (McKinsey, 2014). policies. This poses financial issues for any business whether intentional or not. Other disadvantages are the willingness for change. Some people (me included until attending SNHU) have a “fear of technology or are just accustomed” (Hopewood. S, 2019) to doing things a certain way. This change can be difficult to overcome. Lack of training and lack of qualified personnel is something to consider as well. People tend to dislike new technology because they are uncomfortable with it. According to Sean Hopewood, “it is important to allocate resources for training before implementing a new software or equipment” (Hopewood. S, 2019). I felt the comfortability completing my first technology class, as I started to get accustomed to doing it, the greater comfort level I had. In closing, my overall experience with this program (MIS) has been rewarding and has allowed me to overcome obstacles and in a sense come out of my shell. The resources available from the University were enlightening and extremely helpful. I started out not knowing much about management information systems and now I can take a dataset, analyze it, and make best practice decisions without hesitation. References Cote, C.
