Grammar (ENG 3302) 03B Determining Inflectional Form for Kolln, Chapter 3 Directions: There are several verbs in English that show no outward difference between past tense, past participle, and bare stem. Two such verbs are HIT and LET. The following sentences contain several underlined occurrences of these words. For each such occurrence, (a) decide whether it is a past tense, past participle, or bare stem. It might be useful to write out the components of the verb-expansion rule. (b) Justify your answer by giving a rule that requires the use of a certain inflectional form. Example: Past Ellen let Beth open the letter. Since “let” is the predicating verb, it must take tense (past or present). Since “Ellen” is a 3PS noun, it would take the -s form in present tense in this example. “Let” does not have the -s form, so it must be in -ed (past tense) form. (1) You must have let the cat out. (2) You may let the children divide the strawberries. (3) Barbara asked Bob to let Dan ride on his tractor. (4) The ball hit the ceiling. (5) Nathan has hit every ball to the right.
