Post Comm Lecture 20 Mongols  Destroyed Central Asia  Russia got it the second worst  Northern China also had it really bad Expansion  Russians expand through basically a wasteland all the way to the Coast  Send out expeditions out for fur o Build a fort and throw up a Russian flag then get attacked by natives  Gov’t then has to go and protect o The fur trappers just keeps exporting fur and claiming land for Russia o Export all the fur to western Europe o Russian would see populations and turn around and Chinese didn’t want didn’t want to go north cause they wanted to farm Russia and China  Russia has a huge overflow of land and resources  China has massive overpopulation and no land or resources o Chinese start illegal immigration  The pipeline in Russia and Japanese o They both fought over where it would go want o The Japanese throw in a bunch of money for this pipeline shipping complex so the Russians decide to bring it to Japan  A bunch of wood and natural gas o Largest continuous forest in the world is in Russia  China is super arid o about the size of US from Mississippi is needed to feed all of Chine o They need water to do this o Himalayas’ glaciers defrost and the that’s where the water comes from  The glaciers are disappearing o The rivers all flow into arid desert dry land o Luckily the Russians have a bunch of frozen lakes  Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and very close to Chinese border  The Chinese want the Russians to be more environmentally conscience because the Russians pollute the crap out of Lake Baikal  Paper mill is right on the shore of Lake Baikal so they shut it down…then Putin scuba dove on the lake and said it wasn’t polluted so he opened the lake back up o 70% of Chinese water supply is unfit for human use
