Liu left her prominent position as Managing Director at Goldman Sachs to join, what her former boss called, a “taxi company.” Didi is a ride-hailing service that has completely dominated the Chinese market, but it did not always use to be that way. There used to be upwards of 30 different players on the board, including UBER, until Liu was able to merge with them, making Didi the parent company. By doing so, this allowed Didi to dominate the market in China and work to expand all throughout Europe, Africa, and Latin America (Khan, 2017). If I had to identify a motivation theory for Jean Liu, I would say she identifies the most with the goal-setting theory. This theory says that difficult goals can lead to higher performance as long as it is given the necessary feedback (Judge, 2018). In an interview Liu did with David Rubenstein (2019), she mentions how her father would help motivate her by telling her things like “Life is supposed to be hard.” By understanding this phrase Liu takes into account the two parts about committing to a goal which is 1.) believing you can achieve the goal, and 2.) wanting to achieve the goal (Judge, 2018).
