Chapter | THE PROBLEM Introduction Filipinos have a deep regard for education, which they view as a primary avenue for upward social and economic mobility. Education, in a very general sense can be summed up at a basic level as referring to an experience or act that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. Philippine education is patterned after the American system, with English as the medium of instruction. One should bear in mind that a nation's strength depends on the high quality of its education system and the strength of such a system, in turn, relies on qualified and motivated teachers. Schools are classified into public (government) or private (non- government). Although secondary education is not compulsory in the Philippines, it is widely attended, particularly in the more urban areas of the country. At this level, private schools enroll a much higher percentage of students than at the elementary level. Private secondary schools does not get money from the government and that is run by a group of private individuals. Schools exist, primarily to educate children. It is for this purpose that teachers are employed in schools. Schools would definitely not survive without motivated and dedicated teachers. On the other hand, motivation is one of the essential elements of human resource management. Without appropriate level of motivated behaviour and activity we cannot determine goals and require their meeting. Motivation is an important term commonly used to encourage people to carry out the assigned work with sincerity, dedication, and enthusiasm. In Lipa City, education is being place with high regard and sees it as a vehicle that will carry its people towards better life and a better future. Lipa City is a recreational, religious, commercial, industrial and educational center. According to the latest master’s list of open schools of the DepED Lipa there are twenty — nine private secondary schools in the City. According to Davao’'s First Online News, many private schools offer low wages to their teachers compared to the public school teachers. Their regular benefits include insurance, disability benefits, leave programs, retirement plans, professional development plans and tuition reimbursement for continuing education. This is the reason why most of the teachers in private school transfer into public school after they have passed the board exam. This is because teachers believe that they can have better income as well as better benefits when they are in a public school. Though teachers of private school have more resources that can be used in teaching and they have better environment than that of public school. For faculty members, motivation influences their decision whether they are going to stay in their job or whether they are going to leave the job and explore further other opportunities. If the organization wants to keep these employees, it is appropriate to offer them with incentives and extra pay. However, we can say in general, monetary incentives, as a motivation factor, have an important role only from a short term point of view. With this, the researchers would like to examine David McClelland and his associates proposed McClelland’s theory of Needs / Achievement Motivation Theory. This theory states that human behavior is affected by three needs - Need for Power, Achievement and Affiliation. Need for achievement is the urge to excel, to accomplish in relation to a set of standards, to struggle to achieve success. Need for power is the desire to influence other individual's behavior as per your wish. In other words, it is the desire to have control over others and to be influential. Need for affiliation is a need for open and sociable interpersonal relationships. In other words, it is a desire for relationship based on co-operation and mutual understanding. The outcome of interest in this theory is the motivational needs of faculty members which is related by the length of continuous service with the same service, and which usually determines the orderofneeds of senior employees to be motivated. Most of this needs can be classed as either achievement, affiliation, or power. The faculty members with high achievement needs are highly motivated by competing and challenging work. They look for promotional opportunities in job. Faculty members with high need for power turn out to be more efficient and successful employees. They are more determine and loyal to the organization they work for. The faculty member's ability to make decisions is hamper if they have a high affiliation need as they prefer to be accept and like by others, and this weakens their objectivity. Faculty members having high affiliation needs prefer working in an environment providing greater personal interaction. Central to this theory is the idea that the order of needs extremely affect directly the motivational needs of the faculty member. Conceptual Framework The conceptual paradigm showed the framework that serves as the support of the study. It is composed of the input, process, and output that the researchers used to attained at the exact information. INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT Demographic Profile of the Respondents: age ; sex; civil status; educational attainment; Implication to the monthly Faculty Members : Survey . income; and |___,| . and Private length of Questionnaires |——>| Secondary service Schools employment status VV Vv VVVV McClelland’s Theory of Needs: > achievement need; > power need; and > affiliation need Figure 2 Conceptual Paradigm in the Motivational Needs among Faculty Members in Selected Private Secondary Schools in Lipa City Figure 2 showed the conceptual paradigm on the motivational needs among faculty members in selected private secondary schools in Lipa City. Enabled in determining the motivational needs of the faculty members, the figure contains three parts, first is the input which is composed of the demographic profile of the respondents including the age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, monthly income, length of service and employment status. Combined with McClleland’s Theory of Needs in motivation of faculty members in terms of achievement need, power need, and affiliation need. The second part is the process which included the survey questionnaires, which served as a data gathering instrument enabled to collect accurate information from the respondents. And last, is the output, which pertained to the result of the study, thus included the implication to the faculty members and private secondary schools. Research Hypothesis There is no significant relationship between the motivational needs of the respondents when grouped according to demographic profile. Significance of the Study This study was deemed significant to private secondary schools in Lipa City, to the faculty members, the university, students of business related courses and future researchers. To the private secondary schools of Lipa City, the outcome of this study identified the needs that teachers regard as most important and likely motivated them to perform effectively and efficiently. This study gave the institutions an avenue to better understand which is needed in improving and motivating the faculty members. 10 For better understanding of the study the researchers defined the following terms conceptually and operationally. Achievement Need. This refers to the tendency to set and work hard to meet personal standards and to attain goals within one's social environment (Ziegler, Schmukle, Egloff and Buhner, 2010).
