The Motorcycle Diaries - Analysis & Reflection As humans, we all strive to answer one big question: was it all worth it? What we do in our daily lives, the countless adventures we participate in, and most importantly the risks we take. In the collection of diary entries of Emesto ‘Che’ Guevara, he and his comrade Alberto Granado take a blind leap of faith and embark on a journey that would change their lives forever. Two friends, two minds, two paths, and one jouney. Each taking complete turns in their thoughts and lifestyles. Throughout their journey together, they fight for their possessions, lives, and identity. Constantly having to battle themselves over what is right and what is wrong. Early on, Ernesto looks back at his notes that he meticulously produced for the trip. These included travel plans, maps, sites, and people to visit. Constantly contradicting himself he adds, “when I made these travel notes, hot and fresh with enthusiasm, I wrote some things that were perhaps a little flashy and somewhat removed from the intended spirit of scientific inquiry.” (pg. 85) Beginning his journey with a mindset to discover and explore the medical field in what it had to offer in leprosy, he placed himself and his friend, Alberto, on a path of educational discovery tather than personal. Ernesto somewhat judges some of the locations and marks them for not being up to him par. “The standard of living in Chile is much lower than in Argentina. On top of the very low wages paid in the south, unemployment is high and the authorities afford workers very little protection.” (pg. 87) Although he wasn’t raised in riches, he wasn’t raised in poverty. This would be the first time he would be exposed to these conditions and doesn’t quite seem to know how to handle them. These bitter realizations start having effects on his thought process, and start shifting him path in ways he, himself, wouldn't realize until further exposure. While exploring Peru, the two adventurers, Ernesto and Alberto were further exposed to the lower class lifestyle. They talked with locals, and tried improving whatever they could. Offering medical help to whoever needed it most. Much to their surprise, locals talked more of education. “He spoke of the need to build schools that would orient individuals within their own world, enabling them to play a useful role within in; of the need to change fundamentally the present system of education, which, on the rare occasions it does offer Indians education... The destiny of those unhappy individuals is to stagnate in some minor bureaucratic position and die hoping that one of their children, thanks to the miraculous powers of a drop of colonizing blood in their veins, might somehow achieve the goal they aspire to until their last days.” (pg. 97) Che Guevara tealized the lack of attention given to these indiginous people and the potential they held in not
