Download Mounting for a Glass Mirror - Introductory Optomechanical Engineering | OPTI 521 and more Assignments Chemistry in PDF only on Docsity!           MOUNTING FOR A GLASS MIRROR Mike Borden OPTI 521 University of Arizona mborden@optics.arizona.edu December 7, 2008                 Objective:    The objective of this problem is to analyze different types of mounts for a mirror made of Zerodur.  The  mirror has a diameter of 200 mm and a thickness of 20 mm.    Analysis:  a) How much does this mirror weigh?  The mass of this mirror is calculated using the equation:    where V is the volume and   is the density of Zerodur.  In this case, the volume is calculated as follows:        b) For the case where the mirror is on its back (optical axis vertical), determine the optimal  location for three support points on the back and calculate the self‐weight induced figure errors.  The optimal location for the 3 mounts on the back of the mirror are at .645 times the diameter of the  mirror.  The three mounts will be placed at this diameter while being spaced equally apart radially.  For 3  mounts, they would be placed 120 degrees apart from one another.    The diameter of the ring where the three mounts are to be located is calculated as follows:      The resulting mount layout can be seen in Figure 1:
