Mutations Brochure Project Assigned Mutation: โ— Mutation will be assigned in class, do not switch topics under any circumstances! Expectations โ— Produce a visually appealing information brochure for your assigned mutation/disorder โ—‹ Trifold brochure (folded in thirds) โ—‹ In color โ—‹ All words and pictures in ink โ—‹ Flow of information is easy to understand โ—‹ Obvious effort put into brochure โ— Brochure can be digitally generated, done by hand or a mix of both โ— Final product has to be physically printed/present on due date โ— Detailed and accurate information required (avoid vague language/info but do not use too much medical jargon) โ— Research given mutation but DO NOT plagiarize from the internet โ—‹ Any plagiarism (word for word; close paraphrasing) will result in automatic zero! โ— At minimum, must cover the topics below Required Topics (may add additional topics) 1. Overview & Definition of Mutation a. What is the genetic condition? b. Provide a description and a picture. c. Include a unique/ interesting fact. 2. Genetic and/or Chromosomal Error a. What causes this genetic condition? Be specific (i.e. monosomy, trisomy, deletion, specific protein? Cannot be โ€œmutated DNAโ€) 3. Physiology & Symptoms a. Describe how the genetic condition causes physical abnormalities. b. Any other symptoms that are not physical (often cognitive) 4. Disorder Detection and/or Onset of Symptoms a. Provide examples of how a genetic condition is detected (i.e. prior to birth, only after birth, at a certain age?) b. What is the initial onset of the condition like (symptoms?) 5. Counseling a. How are families with loved ones or people with conditions counseled? b. Any formal support groups or organizations associated with conditions? 6. Treatment a. Known treatments for conditions? โ–  Does not have to be curative but can be medication to treat symptoms b. Any other treatments besides medication? โ–  Physical therapy, speech therapy, etc. 7.
