National Honor Society Selection Criteria & Requirements for the Completion of the Candidacy Application Selection to NHS is a privilege bestowed upon students by the Faculty Council of the school and is not considered a right inherent to any student. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council on the condition of their having met the standards for selection based upon the four pillars of the National Honor Society: scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Each member must demonstrate not only good grades, but also strength in each of the remaining three pillars. NHS is more than an honor roll; membership is not automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic performance. Your application is anonymous and is your only chance to convey how you meet the qualifications of NHS. Represent yourself well in each section of the application. Please see below for more information about each of the four qualifications on which your application will be evaluated. Scholarship Students achieve eligibility by earning a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Service Service is generally considered by the Faculty Council to be those actions undertaken by the student which are done on behalf of others without any direct compensation, recognition, or benefit to the student. Service should be ongoing. The committee looks for continuity and quality as well as overall hours. Paid positions, fundraising activities for school or personal trips, and homecoming activities do not qualify. To be selected as a member, a candidate must demonstrate on their Candidacy Form the completion of 20 hours of service performed at school or in the community since the start of ninth grade. Service hours mentioned by candidates on the application MUST include a signature verification and phone number of an adult supervisor of the activity under consideration. Verification is required and will be randomly checked for authenticity. If a signature cannot be obtained, email correspondence, copies of certificates, and other official documentation that verifies service may be attached and submitted with your application. Please keep in mind that your application is anonymous, so be sure to use only your student ID number on any such documentation. Service Examples A student exercises service when the individual…  Voluntarily provides dependable and well-organized assistance and is willing to make sacrifices to offer this assistance.  Is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities.  Participates in some activity outside of school (e.g., Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, religious groups, volunteer activities for the elderly, poor, or disadvantaged) that provides active volunteer opportunities.  Willingly mentors someone in school or in the community.  Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students. Please note that helping your family and/or peers does NOT qualify as documented service for NHS. For tutoring to qualify as service, the experience must directly benefit the student being tutored (as opposed to a study group where the experience is beneficial to all involved). Character According to the Faculty Council, a person of character demonstrates the following six qualities (as determined by National Honor Society and Character Counts! Coalition): trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. See below for examples. A candidate must be able to demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies. The following will be considered for each student in order to evaluate their character:  One (1) adult community member (non-family member) recommendation form and two (2) faculty recommendation forms  After initial screening by the Faculty Council, the principal may review discipline records of candidates and provide relevant information to Faculty Council if needed. A student of character…  Does what they say they will do and has the courage to do the right thing.  Is open-minded, listens to others, and treats people fairly. The student does not take advantage of others or blame others carelessly.  Treats others with respect and consideration and is tolerant and accepting of differences.  Is kind, compassionate, forgiving, helpful, charitable, altruistic, and expresses gratitude.  Does what they are supposed to do, plans ahead, is diligent, and perseveres.  Uses self-control and is self-disciplined, thinks before they act, and is accountable for their words, actions, and attitudes.  Cooperates by complying with the Pine-Richland School District Discipline Code.  Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously while learning from their mistakes.  Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and academic integrity.  Does their share to make the school and community better, gets involved, and stays informed.  Relies on self, not parents, to communicate with faculty, advisers, and student officers. Leadership Please see the next page for what the Faculty Council considers leadership and for examples and non- examples of leadership activities. A student must identify one (1) leadership experience at school or in the community achieved between the beginning of the ninth grade and the time of application. A title or position is not necessarily required, but students must provide adequate information regarding the leadership role and responsibilities. Only those positions in which the student was directly responsible for directing or motivating others (evidenced by specific, observable, and documented actions and leadership behaviors) should be included. For this leadership experience, each student should fill out a Leadership Evaluation Form (yellow form). On the yellow form, an explanation must be provided that clearly explains the active leadership activities performed by the candidate. Students must be specific about their duties, responsibilities, and actions in their leadership roles. The candidate will fill out the front of the yellow form, and an adult who witnessed the specified leadership experience (non-family member) will fill out the back of the yellow form. The witness of the leadership activity must verify and support the student’s leadership experience by completing the back of the Leadership Evaluation Form, signing their name, and providing a phone number and email at which they can be reached for confirmation. Verification is required and will be randomly checked for authenticity.
