Naval Architecture Homework 4: Creating a 3D Model of a Mariner Class Ship using Rhino, Study notes of Aerospace Engineering

A naval architecture homework assignment for students, due on february 15, 2011. The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate understanding of tables of offsets by creating a 3d model of a mariner class ship using rhino software. Students are also required to explain differences between their model and textbook views, calculate waterplane area and coefficients, and find the longitudinal center of floatation. Useful rhino commands include points, mirror, curvethroughpt, loft, srfptgrid, and networksrf.

AOE 3204 Naval Architecture Homework 4 Assigned: February 8, 2011 Due: February 15, 2011 The purpose of this homework is for the student to demonstrate his/her understanding of tables of offsets. To complete this homework you will need Rhino–available in the student computer lab. (1) Using the table of offsets on page 31 of your text for a Mariner class vessel, create a 3D model of the Mariner class ship. (2) Explain why your model does not look identical to the views from the lines drawing in Figure 2-1 on page 24 of your text. (3) Using the integration method of your choice, calculate the waterplane area and waterplane coefficient at 32’ draft. (4) Using the integration method of your choice, calculate the first moment of the waterplane about mid- ships. You can integrate xy the same way you integrated y. Create a column in a spreadsheet multiplying x values (distance to each station) by y values (beam at that station) then apply your integration method to the column representing xy. (5) Calculate the location of the longitudinal center of floatation. (6) Calculate the midship section submerged area and midship section coefficient at 32’ draft. (7) Submit your completed Rhino file and calculations on the course Sholar site. This will be a time consuming homework. Please start early and budget your time wisely. You can do this many different ways, but a few commands in Rhino you may find useful include POINTS, MIRROR, CURVETHROUGHPT, LOFT, SRFPTGRID and NETWORKSRF. 1
