Recently, there have been some error messages generated concerning errors and data inconsistency in the customer databases where the customer contact information and credit card information are kept. Jackie is leaving town for 2 weeks on a business trip. She is trying to decide whether to copy the databases to her laptop and troubleshoot the problems while away from the office. What are the risks of copying the database to the laptop and taking it home or on a trip? What are the chances that this data will be at risk? Given that this database contains customer contact information and credit card information, we cannot, at any cost, put this information in any kind of danger. On the other hand, if the database problems are not fixed, there may be more errors and data inconsistencies. Summary: Jackie, a database manager at retail company going out of the town for personal reason. Her company currently suffering some data inconsistency and some errors are generating regarding data. Jackie being manager, she must think about company reputation and valuable data. Jackie has two option, 1- she can take all the company data and files in a mobile device with her on her trip. Or option two she can leave situation as it is and take care of the problem once she returns from the trip. Jackie decides to choose option then it could be bad idea to gather data in mobile device because there is huge risk of data being stolen, corrupted, or loss of data. But if Jackie waits for two weeks then company can loss great amount of profit if problem is not fix. I would suggest that Jackie can hire or assigned another person to fix error while she is away for business work. Taking data with can be risky, company reputation depends on it. Jackie will mostly be likely to use public internet while she is away that means anyone can hack her computer and their data from it. Taking a database to the laptop and taking it home or on a trip can cause minor and major risks depends on how it is protected. There are many reasons it could be damaged while on trip such as a minor water damage. Liquids cause short circuit of important electronic components and they are hard to recover afterwards. Hard drives are usually placed in protective case and may be still used after getting a little wet. However, harder soaking makes hard drives inaccessible, too. Fire and explosion could also be one of the reason of data loss happen rarely, but fire most probably destroys both your computer and data saved on it. This kind of damages can be considered as minor as you have a data store in company and a copy which was lost. Major risk of database is theft of computer it is a real tragedy to lose both computer and data at the same time. There is always the danger of burglars breaking into your home and stealing electronic devices. While traveling, you may leave your laptop unattended, lose it in an airport, conference centers, coffee shops or any other crowded place. Without data security, people are at risk for identity fraud, theft, destruction of device can occur. In today’s technology-dependent world, data security is necessary. Improved data security methods are constantly being developed to protect important databases, and it is likely that data security will only rise in importance as our technology increases. References
