Gaynelle LeBlanc November 1, 2007 EDTC 100-B A Philosophy Concerning Education Since the beginning of time, education has shown its ability to advance mankind. From the creation of the Great Pyramids to the completion of Microsoft Word, education has bettered the lives of human beings. Every good thing in life is not always free, in fact, most good things come with a great price. What I am implying is that in order to obtain an education, one must devote himself to learning. Education demands time, patience, and participation. As a teacher, my main priority will be to persuade children to pay the price for education. Children are use to putting educational activities on the back burner. It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to grasp the importance of studying for a test or completing homework. If the children cannot see the point of school, they are prone to be indifferent towards any aspect of learning. There is an old saying that says, “Practice What You Preach.” As a teacher, that saying will apply to me. Teachers, too, must constantly be educated. Day by day, scientists and researchers are discovering more and more about this mysterious universe. Being the inquisitive beings that they are, children ask questions relentlessly. So, teachers must be prepared for whatever type of questions students toss their way. By becoming well-informed, teachers are better equipped for the classrooms. Children need to realize that learning is not just for little people, but also for the old and seemingly educated. Education is not biased. It does not have a half-life or a death date. If people are not learning, they are staying in a stagnant state. There is no production or advancement in society if there is no learning. Life is all about change and learning is necessary for change. Professionalism is a specific term with a broad meaning. In order to obtain it, one must be able to do away with any type of prejudices, indecencies, and unbecoming behaviors. The ability to be fair, tolerable, and maintain a positive attitude is also required. Professionalism is an attribute that all teachers must possess. For many careers, people choose to become despondent and indifferent to their duties. Maybe it is due to stress or pure boredom. Who knows? But I do know that as a future educator, such an attitude is deadly to the life of a child’s education. Personally, I believe that poor grades are a reflection of poor instruction. Teachers must stay concerned and show a deep interest in the education of a child. For some odd reason, children have this innate ability to discern attitudes. I know that I did. When I was a child, I observed all of my teachers. I responded to my teachers in the way that they had responded to me. If they were dedicated, so was I. If they could care less, so could I. Students’ performances in class are mere reflections of teachers’ attitudes. Following hand on activities, technology is the next best thing in providing help to the classroom. Technology allows children to further expand their understanding of a certain topic. After all, the internet provides tons of information concerning a simple topic. Computer technology also gives children the opportunity to obtain more practice and computer skills.. But with all being said, teachers must clearly distinguish their objectives and motives when integrating technology into the classroom. Technology must never personify a substitute teacher. Technology must also be closely monitored in schools in order to prevent misuse of this powerful tool.
