MIDDLE AMERICA STUDY GUIDE MIDDLE AMERICA GENERAL [Use map to locate countries, physical features] -Identify the countries of Middle America. Name the political capital of each country. Mexico- Mexico City; Honduras- Tegucigalpa; Costa Rica- San Jose; Puerto Rico- San Juan; Guatemala- Guatemala City; Cuba- Havana; Dominican Republic- Santo Domingo; Belize- Belmopan; El Salvador- San Salvador; Nicaragua- Managua; Panama- Panama City Identify the major geographic qualities of Middle America. Tectonic plates that cause hurricanes/volcano eruptions; Middle America is a land bridge but is also made up of islands; mountains, swamps, rainforests, etc. What are the differences between Central and Middle America? Middle America is the whole region; Central America is a region within that &consists of 7 republics (Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama) Mesoamerica- Anthropological label for the Middle American culture hearth Compare the geographical differences between Mainland and Rimland. The Mainland is all continental (from Mexico to Panama) and is more isolated. It’s the region of haciendas and is self-sufficient. The Rimland is the chain of islands & the region of plantations. DEFINITIONS Mestizo- A person of mixed American Indian and European ancestry Mulatto- A person of mixed black African and European ancestry Transculturation- Two-way cultural borrowing that occurs when different cultures of approximately equal complexity and technological level come into close contact Ejidos- Communally owned cooperative farmland carved from haciendas, mostly in central and southern Mexico Maquiladoras- The term originally given to new industrial plants in Mexico’s northern (U.S.A.) border sector. Placering- A process of ‘washing’ gold from streams carrying gold dust and nuggets. The Spanish first introduced this process to the new World in the early 1500’s. Plantations are organized to produce a cash crop while haciendas are for the purpose of social prestige & self-sufficiency. Owners of haciendas don’t push to the max potential Why do the export crops and mineral resources of the Caribbean provide limited incomes for its people? Why is poverty so widespread? It increases trade between US & Central America and signals to the world that Central America has taken a turn for the better. Bolivia- tin, tungsten, antimony, silver, and oil &gas (developing); potatoes, sugar, coffee, corn, cocoa, textiles, food processing, and clothing Chile- grains, onions, beans, potatoes, peas, fruits, fish processing, wood products and steel Peru- zinc, lead, copper, silver, and tungsten; cotton, sugar, coffee, corn, fish, fish meal, mineral processing, light industry, and textiles In examining the geography of cocaine, which South American countries grow cocaine? Columbia, Bolivia, and Peru Identify the stages of production and transportation of cocaine. 1. Extracting coca 2. What is the population growth rate among the 6 Brazilian regions? It’s nearly halved (at 1.4% now)
