Noun-Adjective Agreement When using adjectives (describing words) in Spanish, the adjectives must agree in GENDER with the nouns they are describing. This means that when using adjectives that end in an “o,” we must change the “o” to an “a” if we are describing a feminine object. Only the letter “o” can be changed to an “a” – no other letters can be changed. Examples: la mochila roja the red backpack rojo changes to roja because mochila is a feminine word el libro rojo the red book rojo doesn’t change because libro is a masculine word la mochila verde the green backpack verde doesn’t change because it doesn’t end in an “o” – only the letter “o” can change to an “a” Adjectives must also agree in NUMBER with the nouns they are describing. This means that if our noun is plural, the adjective must also be plural. Examples: los libros amarillos the yellow books amarillo becomes plural by adding an “s” because it ends in a vowel los libros azules the blue books azul becomes plural by adding an “es” because it ends in a consonant las mochilas rosadas the pink backpacks rosado becomes rosadas because it has to be both feminine and plural Always remember to put adjectives after nouns! Spanish is a matching game! Everything must agree in gender and number so always check your endings!
