Each patient is an individual with his or her own culture and values. In order to provide culturally competent care, the provider must recognize that care has to be tailored according to the patient’s culture. The provider must also recognize that the patient may need accommodations such as a translator. Their culture may also dictate that a person of the same gender has to be the one to assess them. The provider must also understand that different cultures perceive healthcare differently. For example, some cultures follow western medicine and believe in medications, while others follow more of a holistic approach. Home remedies are also a major part of a persons ‘culture and should be talked about how it can either be incorporated into a treatment plan or if it will be contraindicated. The major take away from this assignment is that as a healthcare provider, you need to assess each patient according to their cultural needs and with a sensitivity to their cultural beliefs.
