OHS 2302 Evaluating Safety Data Sheet : Acetone Columbia Southern University OHS 2302-19A-4A21-S1, Introduction to Regulatory Compliance According to the Safety Data Sheet provided by Sigma-Aldrich Inc. for Acetone, section two identifies the following hazards in accordance with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS): 1. Flammable liquids (Category 2), indicating highly flammable liquid and vapor, the flash point indicated at -17 C (1.4 F). 2. Eye irritation (Category 2A), indicating serious eye damage or irritation. 3. Specific target organ toxicity – single exposure (Category 3), advising the chemical may cause drowsiness or dizziness with narcotic effects (Sigma-Aldrich Inc., 2020). Since the flashpoint of this acetone is below 200 F, it now falls into OSHA’s 29CFR 1910.106, for the handling, storage, and use of flammable liquids. This chemical should only be held in approved metal containers. A containment room should be available to safely store excess inventory to be distributed for use in daily operations. The room should have adequate ventilation allowing no more than a 10 % vaporization, along with an open grated trench that will drain to a safe location in the event of a spill. Doors to other rooms within the building will be fire-proof, and the room will be liquid-tight wherever walls meet the floor (Secondary containment and OSHA's flammable liquid storage, 2016). Whenever a drum is opened for distribution, care must be taken to ensure the container is completely resealed and remains upright to prevent leakage (Sigma-Aldrich Inc., 2020).
