Directions for Summer 2020 Reading Grade 8 On all materials write your name and the grade you will be in by August. All assignments must be typed in Times New Roman font. Read three books over the summer! Only 3!  You will be assessed in 3 different ways for your summer reading: A. ****First Required Book: (The Red Umbrella) will be assessed in class in September when you return to school. It is worth 40 points. DO NOT do a project on this required book. Read the book close to the end of summer if possible so it is fresh in your mind. B. ****Summary Activity: (choose a book from either the non-fiction or the fiction list) is worth 10 points 1. Read your book. You may take notes on characters, setting and plot on your graphic organizer as you read to help you write your summary, but this is optional. 2. Type a ONE paragraph summary double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font. Your summary should include the title of your book and the author’s name. Identify the main character(s) and give a short summary of the plot, including the conflict and solution to a character’s problem, if appropriate. The title of the book should be in italics. This summary will be handed in the first week of class. ***Second Required Book: Book Jacket Activity: (for The Red Kayak) is worth 30 points 1. Use a large piece of drawing paper (about 12 X 18) and fold it in half. I can give you one of these before you leave school if you want. 2. Create an original picture for the front of your book jacket. The picture should depict a setting or scene that is connected to the book. Do Not Copy the Picture from the Cover of Your Book! The title and author’s name should be displayed on the front of the jacket. 3. Follow the directions to complete your book jacket. After writing, your well-developed paragraphs should be pasted onto the inside of your folded paper. Check the spelling, punctuation and grammar in your paragraphs. Your font should be no smaller than 10 point and no larger than 14 point.
