Spectroscopy: study of how photons interact with matter in a wavelength dependent fashion. Can be used to get qualitative or quantitative information. Look at emission, absorption/transmission, reflectance. Usually a “point” sample ! Imaging: Technique that provides a 2 or 3 dimensional image either taken all at once or through accumulation of “points” of data. Can utilize tags (e.g. fluorescent probes). Usually only know a “total” photon count for each point of the image. ! Hyperspectral imaging: results in an image where for each point substantial spectroscopic information is also known.
