Organic Chemistry Laboratory Notebook and Report Guidelines for Chem 333, Lab Reports of Organic Chemistry

The requirements for a laboratory notebook and report in the organic chemistry course (chem 333). Students are expected to come prepared with safety equipment, readings, and pre-lab notebook entries. The lab report consists of objective/hypothesis, new techniques, experimental procedure, observations, and conclusions sections. The notebook report serves as both a record and a graded document, with 80% of the grade based on the report and 20% based on lab performance.

Lab Handouts Lab handouts provide a general guide to the experiments described in the lab often customizing them to the particular equipment we have in the lab. While these are available on line at the course website, it is still imperative that you read the assigned material in the text. Come prepared: You must come with a note book and safety goggles and appropriate clothing to be allowed to performed lab work. “Appropriate clothing means your legs must be covered (no shorts), your feet must be covered (no sandals) and no exposed midriffs. In addition you must have read the assigned reading and prepared the pre-lab portion of your notebook report. For safety reasons, you could be asked to leave the lab (and receive a zero) should you fail to demonstrate adequate preparedness for safe execution of the experimental procedure. Notebook-lab report (80% of lab grade) The major portion of your lab grade comes from your notebook report. You must have a permanently bound notebook (composition book) rather than a spiral bound one. (Note you do not have to waste your money on a fancy official lab notebook but we do insist that it is bound so pages do not get lost.) Your instructor will give you more details on keeping the notebook, but realize that the general idea of a lab notebook is to keep an accurate record of what you did and what you observed in lab. See pages 12-14 in your lab text for an introduction. The notebook report will serve as both a report and your notebook and will require portions be written prior to your arrival to the lab. Your notebook report should include: To be completed before lab: (see sample below) I. Objective/hypothesis: II. Guide to new techniques III. Experimental procedure 2 To be completed during lab: IV. Observations V. Conclusions. You should come to lab with your notebook prepared with the objective of the experiment, guide to new techniques and the essential procedural details for conducting the lab already written in your notebook. Lab performance (20% of lab grade) The final portion of your grade comes from your results in performing the experiment. This your performance in the lab, regarding preparation, safety, cleanliness, etc.. While your performance grade may also includes the yield and purity of your chemical products, our emphasis is on learning proper techniques. Your notebook report will include a summary at the end of your write-up for the experiment; no formal lab reports are required. We have used all of these experiments for years.--They can be completed on time by everyone if you are prepared. You will not be allowed to work beyond the time allotted. Failure to complete the experiment will reflect poorly on your grade. Quizzes Your TA may ask you to address specific questions as part of your notebook write-up that should be answered before you arrive to lab. Your TA may also opt to have pre-lab quizzes if students require additional motivation to come prepared. Grading Your instructor will collect your notebook at the end of each lab session to grade your write-up and results. Hence, you must be prepared when you come to lab, and that during the lab you must write your observations as you go along, as you will not have time to "remember" everything you did to write it later. Notebooks will be returned to you in time for you to prepare for the following week's lab. These will be picked up from your TA.
