Department of Defense (DOD) The National Security Act of 1947 - This created the United States Air Force, and restructured the "War Department" into the "Department of Defense." Department of Defense Mission - The Department of Defense provides the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation's security. The United States Army - This branch of the Armed Forces was officially established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775. The United States Army Mission - To deploy, fight and win our nation's wars by providing ready, prompt and sustained land dominance by Army forces across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the joint force. The United States Air Force Mission - To fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace. The United States Navy - This branch of the Armed Forces was created on 13 October 1775. The United States Air Force - This branch of the Armed Forces was created on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947. The United States Navy Mission - To recruit, train, equip, and organize to deliver combat ready Naval forces to win conflicts and wars while maintaining security and deterrence through sustained forward presence. The United States Marine Corps - This branch of the Armed Forces was established on 10 November 1775. The United States Coast Guard Mission - To ensure our Nation's maritime safety, security and stewardship. The Mission of the United States Marine Corps - U.S. Marines are forward deployed to win our Nation's battles swiftly and aggressively in times of crisis. We fight on land, sea and air, as well as provide forces and detachments to naval ships and ground operations. The United States Coast Guard - We were created on 4 August 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service. Tactical - Of or pertaining to tactics. The level of war where battles and campaigns are planned and executed to achieve military objectives assigned to military units. Combatant Commands - The eleven Major War-fighting Commands within the Department of Defense. United States European Command (USEUCOM), United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM), United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), United States Indo-Pacific Command (USPACOM) - The Six Geographic Combatant Commands in DOD. Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) - Principal Military Adviser to the President, The Secretary of Defense (SECDEF), and the National Security Council. Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) - Principal Defense Adviser to the President. The Joint Chiefs of Staff - The immediate senior military staff advisors to the Secretary of Defense. President of United States and the Secretary of Defense (POTUS and SECDEF) - National Command Authority (NCA) of the United States. POTUS, SECDEF, Unified Combatant Command Commander (CINC) - The DOD Operational (War-fighting) Chain of Command. The National Guard - The oldest component of the Armed Forces, organized in Massachusetts Bay Colony on 13 Dec 1636. The Mission of National Guard - During peacetime they answer to leadership in the 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia. During national emergencies, however, the President reserves the right to mobilize them putting them in federal duty status. When federalized, the units answer to the Combatant Commander of the theater in which they are operating and, ultimately, to the President. The Reserve Forces Mission - Provides trained, equipped, ready troops & cohesive units to reinforce the active force and meet the Nation's requirements in times of need.
