Paper 1 Exploring the Self First Draft due Thursday Sep 19 Final Draft due Thursday Sep 26 Overview: Write an essay that explores your own identity or trait that has figured most prominently in your life. The goal of the essay is to define the trait, describe it, and examine how it has affected who you are. Read Chapter Two in our book carefully since it will help you generate ideas for your writing. Please decide on an identity or trait early on in the process so that you are able to do all of the prewriting activities leading up to the paper. Goals and Skills: To complete this assignment you will need to begin to develop all of the required skills of the course. Your paper will ask you to reflect on your personal life experience so that it may be clearly described to an audience. This means that while writing this paper you will get to know yourself better and you will learn things about your life, but the paper still needs to be cleanly packaged for an audience using clear writing techniques and strategies such as narration, description, explanation, and dialogue. We will begin the writing process by analyzing texts that explore the self to see ways that professional writers reflect on their experiences so we might enhance our own essays. You will share your work with peers in a review session, and we will use technology to communicate with classmates and instructor. Structure: Your essay should NOT be "academic" in form with introduction and conclusion; rather it should mix strategies of narration, description, explanation, and dialogue. Your essay will use techniques such as narrative pace and suspense. Make sure to start with action rather than explanation. IT makes the paper more interesting for the reader. Service Learning Topics: Although you will just be beginning your Service Learning internship, but you should be on the lookout for what the tutoring says about your personality. For this first essay, you will want to explore an aspect of your identity that is highlighted by your tutoring work.
