Reflection Paper By: Christian Noel Eslit ā€œParasiteā€ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The most shocking nominee among the nine Best Picture nominees was Parasite, and its win in this category was even more surprising. It's a foreign film, subtitled, set totally and entirely in South Korea, like last year's Roma. Bong Joon Ho, the film's writer and director, isn't new to Hollywood, despite what you may think if you watched the Oscars, when he won four trophies. He is mentioned on IMdB as having directed and often written twenty-five previous films, the most famous of which is Snowpiercer, a cult classic future thriller set completely aboard a train. But, with the exception of Walt Disney, Oscar night was his coming-out celebration, as he took home more statuettes (four) than anyone else in the history of the Oscars. Most films fall into one of two categories: comedies or dramas (read: "tragedies"), however this one falls into both. The story clearly moves from comic to dramatic, but one of the bold, and I believe unique, aspects of this film is that its resolution is literally unclear: whether Parasite is a tragedy or a comedy in the traditional sense depends on how one views the final five minutes of the film, and that ending is open to multiple interpretations. I'm at a loss for words. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Much of the film is set in an opulent mansion owned by the Park family, who are highly successful, very affluent, and very stupid. This setting contrasts with the Kim family's basement residence, which is located below street level. The huge difference is vividly highlighted late in the film in an astonishing sequence that shows the heartbroken Kim family traveling from the Parks' home to their own dwelling in gradually farther and farther away long shots. This family lives as far below as one can go in the city's literal and social structure, so far down that the city's sewage floods them in a torrential downpour. The plot revolves around the Kims worming their way into the Parks' employ by a variety of hilarious and threatening acts of subterfuge, as they strive to not just work in the sphere of the wealthy, but to become "the wealthy" themselves. The film is an in-depth examination of classism, and it does it in a variety of ways. The film has several references to education, marriage, wages, and other topics. The upper class is presented to be dumb, morally impoverished, and undeserving, despite their wealth and power. South Korean director Bong Joon Soo-Hyeon has a way of being remarkably transparent about his intentions without making the viewer feel talked-down-to. Metaphor is a major element in the film with a large stone being referred to as a metaphor by the main character. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Parasite is a rousingly good human thriller. The film might even have as its main theme a discussion of predestination and free will. It is a film that provides thoughts for many long discussions, and it alone is a worthy Oscar winner. I learned from this movie that greed for being poor can take you to the stage where you will be able to do such vulgar things. Therefore I conclude that being content with what you have right now can prevent doing such horrible things like in the film, also we need to work much harder than we ever had to overcome poverty not by stepping on someone else.
