The subject becomes the passive recipient of the action.  The subject is being “acted upon” Passive Voice  These examples show the subject being acted upon by the verb. • The boy was jumped on by the dog. ◘ The boy (subject) was being jumped on(verb) Reasons to use the Active Voice  The active voice is less awkward and clearly states the relationship between subject and action.  COMPARE  Passive: Your request for funding has been denied by the review committee.  Active: The review committee denied your request for funding. When to use Passive Voice  In general, the passive voice is less direct, less forceful, and less concise that the active voice.  Use the passive voice in the following situations:  when you don’t know or don’t want to reveal the performer of an action  When you want to emphasize the receiver of the action When to use Passive Voice  EXAMPLES:  Awkward Passive: My Bicycle was repainted by John.  Deliberate Passive: My Bicycle was repainted. (The performer is not mentioned and the emphasis is on the bicycle.) CONVERSIO N ACTIVE to PASSIVE  PASSIVE to ACTIVE CONVERSIO N ACTIVE to PASSIVE Changing Active to Passive  Make the object of the active sentence into the subject of the passive sentence.  Example:  ACTIVE VOICE SENTENCE:  Anastasia wrote a letter.  PASSIVE VOICE SENTENCE:  A letter subject object subject Changing Active to Passive  EXAMPLES:  ACTIVE: I baked a cake.  PASSIVE: The cake was baked by me.  ACTIVE: Lian dances on stage.  PASSIVE: The stage was danced on by Lian.  ACTIVE: She cooked dinner last night.  PASSIVE: Dinner last night was cooked by her. CONVERSIO N PASSIVE to ACTIVE Changing Passive to Active  Move the passive sentence’s subject into the active sentence’s direct object slot.  Example:  PASSIVE VOICE SENTENCE:  A letter was written by Anastasia.  ACTIVE VOICE SENTENCE:  …. a letter subject object object
